We created scripts for Reader’s Theatre today, based on a chapter from our novel Stanley. Stanley is a mischievous, but hilarious, child who has recently started school. His teacher, Miss Treacy kept him behind after an eventful day in Junior Infants and wants to hear his side of the story.
Miss Treacy: Now Stanley, there are lots of stories about you at the moment…
Stanley: Stories about me! Wow! Brilliant! Me in stories! Great, Miss! Tell me one please… Stanley and the Three Bears?
Miss Treacy: I’m afraid these are not those types of stories, Stanley. they are more like ‘Once upon a time there was a little girl called Helen who loved yoghurt until one day she found, instead of strawberry chunks, some tadpoles floating at the top of her favourite dessert!’
Stanley: Oh, that type of story.
We continued the conversation and used super expression, tone and pausing whilst reading our scripts. We dare you not to laugh at our version of events!
We have been focusing on creative dancing in PE over the last few weeks, transferring our talents and skills from our frequent GoNoodling in the classroom. At the start we pretended to have Magic Dust bouncing on various body parts, from our toes to our heads, and created individual movement pieces for 8 beats. Then we joined forces and made collaborative movement pieces in pairs and in groups, both mirroring each other and using completely contrasting moves. After that we experimented with a Space Bubble around us and practiced moving in different ways like running, skipping, hopping, walking, turning, jumping and floorwork. We then introduced different ‘flavourings’ to the main ‘ingredients’ of dance by changing direction, speed, levels, shapes and body parts. We love creating fun dances in pairs and with our friends every week, even though it’s thirsty work!
Whether we bound into school full of life and bursting with energy or traipse in with tired faces, there’s nothing we love more than letting off some steam and dancing our socks off using GoNoodle! We use GoNoodle and lots of other exercise breaks throughout the day, in order to keep our minds and bodies active and alert.
We recently completed group projects on various elements of Indian culture, following our teacher’s trip to Kolkata last summer. Each group researched and presented on a particular aspect of Indian culture such as food, religions and customs, clothing and festivals, animals, traditions, sports and languages, famous people. We learnt a lot of thing we did not know about India and how different some things are there, in comparison to Ireland. After researching, each group illustrated their findings on a poster before presenting it to the class. We peer and self-assessed the quality of our project presentations just before the Easter holidays. Some children mentioned they would love to visit India in the future. We can’t wait for our next group projects!
Depending on the weather, we try to run a couple of laps around the Astro pitch every day, individually recording how long it will take us until to each run a marathon (42.195 KM) over the course of 4th Class. When we finish the marathon, we will aim to run to NYC as a whole class!
